Easily topping the list of the 16 biggest car companies by revenue is Volkswagen, which is also the biggest car company in the world in terms of number of vehicles produced, and has been for several years. The biggest market for Volkswagen is China, which accounts for 40% of the company’s sales or close to $120 million.

Volkswagen was initially established by the Nazi Party in the 1930s as Adolf Hitler’s vision of providing affordable cars to the Germans. In fact, the German city of Wolfsburg was also created to house workers of the giant car manufacturer. Some of the biggest and most prestigious brands owned by Volkswagen include Bentley, Lamborghini, Audi, Skoda and Porsche, and of course, the Volkswagen brand. The company was also responsible for one of the biggest scandals in automotive industry history where it admitted to fixing the software of more than 11 million cars to deceive emissions testing. The resulting fines, penalties, and lawsuit settlements saw the company paying more than $30 billion in total.
