2. Lafayette Coney Island, Detroit, Michigan

Rating: 4.5

Number of ratings: 4,920

So, Lafayette Coney Island has quite a backstory stemming from a sibling rivalry. Back in 1936, Bill Keros decided to open Lafayette right next to the existing American Coney Island, which he and his brother Gust had started over a decade earlier at Lafayette and Michigan Avenue. The Keros family isn’t involved with this spot anymore, as Bill’s son George Keros took over and is said to have perfected the iconic chili recipe. Nowadays, Lafayette is run by a group of Yemeni immigrants who took over in 1991. The place has maintained its classic vibe with a long lunch counter and old-school charm. You’ll still see the workers skillfully balancing plates of coneys on their arms as they serve them up to guests.
