1. Sweden

Sweden established the Environment Protection Agency in 1967 and was the first country to pass an environmental protection act. It was also the first country to pass a carbon tax in 1991. In 2023, Sweden charges SEK 1,330 (1 Swedish Krona = 0.097 USD) per tonne of fossil carbon dioxide emitted. Sweden plans to go fossil-free by 2045 and depend entirely on renewable energy.
