International tourism, severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, continued its recovery in 2023. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)’s first World Tourism Barometer of 2024, international tourism concluded 2023 at 88% of pre-pandemic levels, with around 1.3 billion arrivals. At the same time, international tourism receipts hit $1.4 trillion last year, representing nearly 93% of the $1.5 trillion earned in 2019. The latest data by UNWTO also indicates that tourism in the world’s most visited region, Europe, reached 94% of pre-pandemic levels, largely due to intra-regional demand and travel from the US. Adding to this, 2023 was a record year for the EU accommodation sector. The estimated number of nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments in the EU, like hotels, holiday homes and campsites, reached 2.92 billion last year. This number also exceeded the pre-pandemic level for 2019 by 1.6 %, when 2.87 billion tourist overnight stays were counted.
2023 marked an increase compared to the previous year as well, with 171 million more nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments in the EU. The primary cause of this was an increase in foreign visitors. Nearly all EU Member States recorded an increase in nights spent compared to 2022, with the exception of Luxembourg.
That being stated, today we have compiled a list of the best places to visit in Europe before you die. Before we get to our list, let’s have a look at some of the prominent players providing lodging services to travelers in Europe such as Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR) and Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE:HLT).
Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR), founded in 1927, operates, franchises, and licenses lodging brands that include hotel, residential and timeshare properties. On May 10, the company declared a 21.2% hike in its quarterly dividend to $0.63 per share. It is to be paid on June 28 to shareholders on record as of May 24.
As of the close of Q1 2024, 58 hedge funds in Insider Monkey’s database held stakes in Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ:MAR), up from 52 in the previous quarter. The consolidated value of these stakes is nearly $2.3 billion.
Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE:HLT), based in McLean, Virginia, is among the 16 most valuable hotel companies in the world. On April 24, Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE:HLT) posted earnings for the first quarter of 2024, reporting a Non-GAAP EPS of $1.53, beating market estimates by $0.11. The revenue over the period was $2.57 billion, up 12.2% compared to the revenue over the same period last year.
Meanwhile, here are some comments from Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. (NYSE:HLT)’s Q1 2024 Earnings Call:
“For full year 2024, we expect RevPAR growth of 2% to 4%. We forecast adjusted EBITDA of between $3.375 billion and $3.425 billion. We forecast diluted EPS adjusted for special items of between $6.89 and $7.03. Please note that our guidance ranges do not incorporate future share repurchases or any contribution from Graduate Hotels, which we expect to close in the second quarter. Moving on to capital return. We paid a cash dividend of $0.15 per share during the first quarter for a total of $39 million. Our Board also authorized a quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share in the second quarter. Year-to-date, we have returned more than $900 million to shareholders in the form of buybacks and dividends. And for the full year, we expect to return approximately $3 billion.”
Our Methodology
We used a consensus opinion-based rankings approach for this article. Information was collected from relevant Reddit threads, like r/AskReddit, r/travel, and r/AskEurope, where users discuss and inquire about popular European travel destinations. We used search terms such as “top places to visit in Europe before you die”, “bucket list things to do in Europe”, and “unique places to visit in Europe” to find relevant threads.
We went on to assign a score to each place. This means that each time it was recommended in a thread, it received a score of 1. Finally, we sorted the places by their scores and identified the 40 best places to visit in Europe before you die. The places have been ranked in ascending order based on their overall scores.
It’s important to remember that lists such as this one are subjective and fail to include places that ought to be at or near the top of the list. Please note that we regarded Turkey as a European country for the purpose of this article.
