3. Kabul, Afghanistan
Afghanistan’s capital, currently ruled by the Taliban, is among the most dangerous cities in the world. The four million people living there must contend with starvation, Taliban persecution, and terrorist attacks. Taliban detainees run the risk of facing public humiliation. As per the Taliban’s interpretation of sharia law, an individual facing theft charges stands to lose one’s hand. A man who faces accusations of being gay runs the risk of dying. Addicts run the risk of receiving cruel punishment from Taliban enforcers. Heroin trafficking used to provide funding for the Taliban, and a few grams of opium are about the same price as a pack of cigarettes. In Afghanistan, 10% of people suffer from heroin or opium addiction. Speaking in English also carries some risk. As evidence of having worked with the enemy, the Taliban interpret it as such.
