30 Best Cities to Live in the World for Quality of Life

In this article, we will discuss the 30 best cities to live in the world for quality of life. You can skip our detailed discussion and see the 10 Best Cities to Live in the World for Quality of Life.

The appeal of living in developed cities stems from the abundance of job opportunities and the potential for career advancement. These urban centers typically offer higher salaries, access to better healthcare and education, superior infrastructure, and a diversified cultural environment.

Urban vs. Rural Experiences: Cost of Living

In 2023, according to data from the World Bank, 57.34% of the global population resided in urban areas. This figure reflects the ongoing trend of urbanization, driven by factors such as industrialization, better economic opportunities, and improved living standards in cities. The shift from rural to urban settings continues to be a noteworthy phenomenon, as developing nations undergo rapid industrialization and developed countries see further expansion of their urban centers.

Meanwhile, the United States had a considerably higher urban population in 2023, with 83.30% of its residents living in urban areas. The U.S. urbanization rate highlights its position as a highly developed nation where most of the population is centered around metropolitan hubs that offer greater access to jobs, education, and services.

Cost of living is a key determinant of quality of life, with notable differences between urban and rural areas. In 2022, the OECD iLibrary reported that purchasing a home in the city center tends to be approximately 30% more costly compared to suburban areas. However, following the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in remote work, suburban property prices have been rising at a faster rate than those in central districts.

Income inequality is notably pronounced in capital cities and less developed regions, where the disposable income of the richest 20% of the population is approximately 7 times that of the poorest 20%. This disparity indicates a significant concentration of wealth among the top earners in these areas, highlighting the challenges in achieving equitable income distribution across different regions.

Although rural areas offer lower housing costs, but such regions typically lack higher-paying job opportunities. Rural residents may need to commute to urban centers for work, increasing transportation costs. While overall living expenses may be lower, the lack of economic opportunities in rural areas can offset these savings, potentially lowering the standard of living.

Access to Healthcare & Education

A December 2020 report by the GAO highlights the critical role rural hospitals play in delivering healthcare to rural communities. However, from January 2013 to February 2020, over 100 rural hospitals shut down. When these hospitals closed, residents in those areas had to travel greater distances to access healthcare. For common services such as inpatient care, patients had to journey roughly 20 miles farther, while for more specialized services like substance abuse treatment, the distance increased to around 40 miles.

When discussing education, USDA data from 2017 to 2021 indicates that 37% of working-age adults (ages 25–64) in urban areas had attained at least a bachelor’s degree, while only 21% of their rural counterparts reached the same level. For younger adults (ages 25–44), the percentages were higher, with 40% in urban areas and 22% in rural areas holding a bachelor’s degree.

Technology, Transportation & Mobility

Internet speeds in metropolitan areas remain 40% faster than in rural or remote regions. This lack of connectivity limits access to remote job opportunities, telemedicine, and online learning, reducing the overall quality of life for rural residents.

Mobility plays an equally important, if not greater, role in determining the quality of life. Urban areas benefit from extensive public transportation systems, reducing the need for personal vehicles.  Shorter commutes and efficient mobility improve residents’ well-being. In rural areas, public transportation is often non-existent, forcing residents to rely on cars. Long commutes and poorly maintained roads contribute to higher transportation costs and reduced mobility, diminishing the quality of life in rural regions.

Environmental Factors: Clean Air & Green Spaces

While urbanization offers a high standard of living, urban areas often grapple with pollution and a lack of green spaces. City dwellers also face higher levels of noise pollution and limited access to natural landscapes, which can adversely affect both mental and physical health. In contrast, rural areas offer cleaner air and more open spaces. Access to nature promotes outdoor activities, contributing to better health and well-being. However, rural areas can face environmental issues like poor waste management and water contamination from agricultural runoff, which may counteract these benefits.

In July 2023, the WHO reported that approximately 2.2 billion individuals lack access to “safely managed drinking water,” while 3.5 billion did not have safe sanitation facilities, and two billion are without basic hygiene services up until 2022. This indicates that progress toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6, which aims to ensure that everyone’s fundamental water needs are met, is lagging significantly.

Urbanization: Opportunities & Challenges

In April 2023, the World Bank reported that approximately 4.4 billion people, reside in cities. This urbanization trend is projected to continue, with the urban population expected to more than double by 2050, when nearly 70% of people will live in urban areas. Cities generate over 80% of global GDP and, when properly managed, urbanization can drive sustainable growth through increased productivity and innovation.

Yet, rapid urbanization presents challenges, such as the need for affordable housing, infrastructure, services, and jobs, especially for the nearly 1 billion urban poor living in informal settlements. Additionally, over 50% of forcibly displaced people reside in cities, further straining urban resources. Urban development patterns often become entrenched, with urban sprawl outpacing population growth by up to 50%. By 2030, 1.2 million square kilometers of new urban land is projected to be developed. This expansion exerts pressure on land and natural resources, as cities account for two-thirds of global energy consumption and over 70% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable urbanization addresses the challenges of rapid city growth by integrating environmentally responsible practices into urban development. Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:J), a leader in the construction industry, has implemented a comprehensive sustainability strategy known as PlanBeyond 2.0, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions, enhancing biodiversity, and promoting effective water management.

In August 2024, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:J) proudly announced its involvement in designing the Light Rail Extensions to enhance connectivity among communities in the Puget Sound region. This initiative aims to facilitate easier access for commuters to employment, recreational, and educational opportunities through the introduction of two new light rail lines in Washington state. The company has completed the final design for Sound Transit’s Link 2 Line, a new 6.5-mile segment serving the Bellevue and Redmond areas, as well as the 8.5-mile Lynnwood Link Extension, which links passengers from south Snohomish County to downtown Seattle and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Methodology

To compile a list of the 30 best cities to live in the world for quality of life, we went through the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index for 2024. The research released recently in May of 2024 studies 5 metrics including economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance to rank 1000 cities from across the globe. In an effort to make this rating more relevant and specific to quality of life we created a separate list focused on quality of life ratings, environment ratings, and governance ratings; 3 factors that can directly influence the standard of life in a city. We calculated ratings each city got for these three metrics in the index and ranked them on the basis of an average. Cities with lower averages were deemed favorable for quality of life and eventually ranked in this list of 30 best cities to live in the world for quality of life.

At Insider Monkey we are obsessed with the stocks that hedge funds pile into. The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points (see more details here).

With this backdrop, let’s proceed to our list of best cities to live in the world for quality of life.
