2. Gitarama Prison, Rwanda
The Daily Star reports that Gitarama, the most crowded prison in the world, houses over 7,000 prisoners in a space meant for 400. Most inmates are suspects in the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Due to extreme overcrowding, prisoners stand barefoot on filthy ground, leading to severe infections and amputations. In 1995 alone, over 1,000 men died from these conditions.
