3. Diyarbakir Prison, Turkey

One of the highest security prisons is Diyarbakir Prison, built in 1980 in Turkey. This prison became notorious after the 1980 coup and that’s what made it a part of the most dangerous prisons in the world. 

Used as a martial law military prison, it targeted Kurds, subjecting them to torture for assimilation. As of now, due to the unsanitary conditions and torture in prisons, 299 people have died while incarcerated. Testimonies revealed horrific abuses like electric shocks and rape. Today, the prison continues with human rights violations, earning notoriety.
