Number of Human Trafficking Cases: 1,334

California was able to secure the top spot in our list of the worst states for human trafficking in America. It can be noted that the state is the most common human trafficking spot in the US. In the year 2020, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received reports of 10,583 human trafficking cases throughout the United States, involving a total of 16,658 victims. Among these cases, California had the highest number, with 1,334 reported instances. From 2015 to 2021, the proportion of human trafficking cases in California that specifically pertained to sex trafficking increased from 87% to 89%. Notably, nearly half of all individuals subjected to trafficking in California are U.S. citizens. However, there has been a significant upsurge in the percentage of trafficked individuals who were born abroad. Meanwhile, the portion of trafficking victims in California who are born outside the United States surged from 36% in 2015.
