Since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, the situation for women and girls in the country has deteriorated significantly, prompting the United Nations to label it as the most repressive place in the world for women

Despite initial assurances of a more moderate approach, the Taliban have consistently enforced strict rules that severely limit women and girls’ freedoms, effectively confining them to their homes. Now Afghanistan is among the countries where females are not allowed to go to school.

During their previous rule in the late 1990s, the Taliban severely restricted access to education, especially for girls, and enforced a strict and limited curriculum. Since their return to power, there have been the same concerns for girls.
