Top on our list of the 25 countries with the lowest female employment is Yemen. Disabled, displaced, and marginalized women and children in Yemen are particularly vulnerable as a result of the conflict, pandemic, and natural catastrophes that have hit the country. In 2021, Yemen was one of the countries with the largest gender gap, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index. In Yemen, only 6% of working-age women participate in the labor work workforce. With only 6% of women in Yemen’s workforce, it’s no surprise that they hold few positions of authority in either the governmental or private sectors. And because of structural inequalities, women and girls have far lower rates of literacy and primary education, and they have a much higher risk of dying in childbirth.
