Religion is extremely important to the lives of billions of people around the world and that is especially true for the 20 most religious cities in the United States. Just two religions, Christianity and Islam, make up over 50% of the world’s population. It is true that no country is as powerful as religion.
In the United States, religion has always played an important part in the ruling of the country, even though it is officially a secular nation. However, recent reports suggest that fewer Americans are identifying as Christians, as the younger generation does not believe religion is as important as it has been to previous generations, increasing the median age of religious believers in the country.
Various studies have been conducted to in order to determine the most religious cities in the United States, as opposed to the 20 least religious cities in the United States. We have chosen two of the most reliable studies conducted by Gallup and Barna Group. Gallup conducted a survey in 188 major metropolitan areas and ranked them according to the percentage of citizens who were very religious, a term meaning that for them religion was extremely important in how they lived their daily lives and that they attended religious services nearly weekly.
On the other hand, the study conducted by Barna Group classified cities as religious based on whether their citizens were “Bible minded,” which means they believed the Bible’s teachings to be accurate and read the Bible weekly.
We averaged the findings from both studies in order to come up with a less biased, more accurate overall ranking. When a city was mentioned on one list and not the other, we used that single ranking as the average ranking.
