Traveling to Asian Countries

The first UNWTO World Tourism Barometer of the year reports that international tourism reached 88% of its pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2023, with around 1.3 billion international arrivals. This recovery is attributed to the release of pent-up demand, improved air connectivity, and a robust rebound in Asian markets and destinations, paving the way for a full recovery by the end of this year. Japan alone welcomed 3.04 million foreign visitors in May, a 60.1% increase from the previous year. This marked the third consecutive month that the number of visitors surpassed 3 million.

ForwardKeys highlighted the significant impact of US tourists in reviving Southeast Asia’s travel sector post-COVID-19. Despite travel still being below pre-pandemic levels in 2022, US visitors returned in larger numbers than from other regions. The Philippines, Singapore, and Indonesia were the top destinations for these tourists. US visitors typically had longer stays and spent more, benefiting local economies.

American perceptions in Asia are mixed, denoted by historical interactions, cultural exchanges, and geopolitical factors. In some regions, there is skepticism towards Americans, often due to historical foreign policies, while in others, there is appreciation for American cultural and technological contributions. The perception of the United States on the global stage has been subject to fluctuations over the years, even among American citizens. According to Gallup, the majority of Americans have remained dissatisfied with the direction of the country for over two decades. In 2023, only 23% expressed satisfaction, while 76% were dissatisfied. The largest group, 48%, were “very dissatisfied,” although this was an improvement from the peak of 66% in January 2021. This intense dissatisfaction decreased to 51% in 2022 and slightly declined further in 2023.

Traveling internationally can be an exciting experience, but it also comes with its own set of risks and uncertainties. To safeguard against potential issues, it is highly advisable to have travel insurance. This is particularly important when exploring diverse and distant regions where healthcare systems, local regulations, and unexpected circumstances can vary greatly. Methodology

To compile the list of the top 20 most pro-American countries in Asia, we analyzed US trade numbers with Asian countries in 2023, sourced from the United States Census Bureau. Countries with the highest trade numbers received a score of 1, while others were assigned a composite score based on their trade figures. Additionally, we examined the percentage and number of American expats living in each Asian country, using data from the International Migrant Stock. The country with the highest number of American expats was assigned a score of 1, and other countries received a normalized score relative to that. Finally, we ranked the top 20 countries based on the highest combined scores from both trade and expat metrics.
