In 2022, China’s fruit exports contracted by 8% in volume and 15% in value compared to 2021, with the total reaching 3.26 million metric tons and $4.6 billion. Meanwhile, the US reported its fresh fruit exports at $4.1 billion, reflecting an 8% YoY decline in value. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the farm value of fruit production in the United States is projected to rise to $24 billion by the year 2032. In terms of volume, the report suggests that the combined production of fruits, tree nuts, and vegetables is expected to reach 172 billion pounds. This represents a modest increase from the 165 billion pounds recorded in 2021. Among these projected volumes, fruits in the USA are expected to contribute approximately 30% to the total output, while vegetable and pulse crops are expected to contribute 70%. The most popular vegetables in the world, such as carrots and potatoes, are among the key components of global diets.

Furthermore, political conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict led to disruptions in supply and high logistical costs. Argentina, a major exporter of fruit to Russia, felt the financial implications of these disruptions as approximately 25% of Argentina’s total export volume is absorbed by Russia and Ukraine. These shipments typically amount to around 40,000 to 50,000 tons each year.

The IFPA research examines the consumption behaviors of 100,000 households in the United States, spanning various regions of the country. The fruits have been ranked in ascending order of the average household consumption levels as of 2022.

Household Consumption Rate: 9%
The United States is responsible for 13% of the global mango production each year, with significant cultivation taking place in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and California. Nonetheless, the US imports approximately 80% of its mango supply from Mexico.
19. Grapefruit
Household Consumption Rate: 13%
The United States serves as a primary exporter of grapefruit and cultivates this fruit in states like Florida, California, and Texas.
18. Kiwi
Household Consumption Rate: 14%
In the US, kiwi is mostly grown in Florida and California. In 2021, the country acquired 174,000 tons of fruit from Florida, 156,000 tons from California, and 96,000 tons from Texas. Additionally, the US also relies on New Zealand, Italy, and Chile for Kiwi imports.

Most of the lime cultivation in the US takes place in Florida, while the imports are mostly from Mexico. According to Mordor Intelligence, the lime market in the United States is estimated to be valued at $2.3 billion in 2023. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.8% and reach $2.8 billion by 2028. In 2021 and 2022, the price of imported limes observed consistent growth in the US. The price is anticipated to peak at $76.3 per package in 2023, reflecting an increase of 70.9% compared to the peak price of $44.7 in 2022.

Oregon, Washington, and California lead the production of blackberries in the US. In the early months of 2022, there was a noticeable rise in the supply of Mexican blackberries in the US compared to 2021. Michoacan, the primary blackberry producer in Mexico, contributed to 94% of the country’s overall production.

The US has seen a steady decrease in its orange production since 2000, when it totaled approximately 13 billion tons. The states producing most of the oranges in the country include Florida, Arizona, Texas, and California.

Mandarins are mainly produced in southern California. To meet consumer demand, the US also imports mandarins from Spain, Morocco, Chile, and Peru.

Over 10 states grow blueberries in the US, including North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Washington, Georgia, Oregon, New Jersey, Minnesota, California, and Michigan.

Household Consumption Rate: 56%
About 98% of Avocados in the US are imported from either Mexico, Chile, or Peru. In 2021, the US imported about 3 billion avocados and exported 31 million.
