20 Countries with the Strongest Armies in the World

This article looks at 20 countries with the strongest armies in the world, with a focus on the capabilities of their ground forces.

A new report published by risk intelligence company, Verisk Maplecroft, has revealed that the number of conflict zones worldwide has increased by nearly two-thirds over the past three years. Ukraine, the Middle East, and parts of Africa have seen wars and unrest intensify, with no immediate end in sight for most conflicts.

On November 19, Kyiv marked 1,000 days since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Azerbaijan and Armenia continue to engage in sporadic exchange of fire along the border after the latter lost control of the Nagorno-Karabakh region in late 2020. The Middle East is going through its worst crisis since the Arab-Israeli War in 1973, with the battle spreading from Gaza to Lebanon in continuation of Israel’s response to the October 2023 Hamas-led attack on the country.

While the human impact of these conflicts has been tragic, the defense industry has seen a boom, with countries substantially increasing their military expenditure. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), global military spending reached a record high of $2.44 trillion in 2023, up 6.8% compared to last year, the steepest rise since 2009. This was also the ninth successive year in which global military spending had risen.

Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT)’s share price has surged 47% since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. In its recent Q3 2024 earnings call on October 21, the company reported net sales of $17.1 billion for the quarter, up 1.2% year-over-year, driven by robust performances from Missiles and Fire Control, and Rotary and Mission Systems segments. Net earnings stood at $1.6 billion, translating to an EPS of $6.80 per share, which beat expectations of $6.54. Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) expects annual revenue in 2024 to be $71.25 billion, reflecting a 5% growth from 2023.

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) has also seen solid returns, having gained 15% since the conflict in the Middle East escalated in October last year. The company posted a revenue of approximately $10 billion during the third quarter of 2024, attributed to a surge in demand for advanced weapons amid intense escalations in the Middle East and the Ukraine-Russia war. EPS was logged at $7, comfortably beating expectations of $6.08 per share. Considering a sustained demand for its weapons, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) anticipates full-year revenue to be between $41 billion and $41.4 billion.

Methodology

Several weighted metrics integral to the strength of ground forces were considered to rank the strongest armies in the world. These included GDP (10%), defense spending (10%), technological capabilities (10%), active manpower (10%), battle tanks (10%), the strength of their nuclear arsenal (15%), the fleet size of attack helicopters (15%), armored fighting vehicles (5%), self-propelled artillery (5%), towed artillery (5%), and rocket projectors (5%).

We then observed where each country ranked on a given metric and calculated its weighted ranking score. For instance, the country with the largest nuclear arsenal ranked first on the metric, which had a weightage of 15%. Therefore, its weighted ranking was 0.15 (1×15%). This was done for all metrics considered in our research.

Finally, weighted ranking scores for each metric were aggregated to get an overall weighted ranking. The 20 Countries with the Strongest Armies in the World are ranked in descending order of their weighted ranking.

Data on GDP was sourced from the IMF, while SIPRI was consulted for figures related to defense spending. We referred to the Power Atlas for nuclear weapons and WIPO’s Global Innovation Index 2024 for technological capabilities rankings. We sought information related to manpower, battle tanks, attack helicopters, armored vehicles, and artillery units from our articles Top 25 Powerful Countries in the World by Military Strength, Artillery Strength by Country: Top 20 Militaries, 15 Militaries with the Most Armored Fighting Vehicles in the World, and 15 Countries with the Most Attack Helicopters in the World.
