20 Countries That Import the Most Natural Gas in the World

3. United States

Natural Gas Imports in 2022: 3,024.2 billion cubic feet

In 2022, around 99% of the United States’ total annual natural gas imports came from Canada, predominantly via pipelines. Additionally, about 1% of the U.S. natural gas imports were in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG), with 99% of that originating from Trinidad and Tobago and the rest from Canada, according to EIA. U.S. natural gas imports typically peak during the winter months to meet the increased demand for heating. According to E&C consultants, the primary factor behind the decline in U.S. natural gas imports has been the substantial rise in domestic natural gas production since 2005. Over the past 17 years, natural gas production in the U.S. has more than doubled, reaching an average of 119 Bcf/d in 2022, up from 50 Bcf/d in 2005.
