The first version by Joan Jett and Steve Jones and Paul Cook from Sex Pistols was released on vinyl in 1979, but in 1981, Joan Jett re-recorded it with her band, The Blackhearts. Shortly after the release of the re-recorded version, this song became a number-one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and it stayed there for seven weeks.
