17. WhatsApp has grown to become the most popular messaging app in the world. Acquired by Facebook in 2014, WhatsApp reported having more than 1 billion users at the end of the third quarter of last year. WhatsApp users in India alone sent a record 14 billion New Year’s messages at the start of 2017. The app also enables group chatting, and voice and video calls. From humble origins, WhatsApp has risen to be among the top social media apps in 2016.
