16. WeChat is another cross-platform instant messaging service which was developed in China and is very popular there. As of September 2016, WeChat had more than 800 million active users. The app can also be used to pay bills and make online purchases, amongst other things. According to a report released by Chinese Company Tencent in December, more calls were being made over WeChat than through telecom carriers.
