Which are the most popular beers In the world? Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink, and the third one overall. In moderation, it’s good for basically any occasion: if you just want to chill for a while on your own, watch some sports or enjoying a night out with friends. You have multiple types from where to choose: stout, ale, barley wine, etc., admittedly, most of them are produced by the largest beer brewing companies in the world, but whether it is the actual taste, the price, or even good advertisement that got us hooked, we all have our go-to beer.

Here at Insider Monkey we ranked the 16 most popular beer brands around the world. For the top 10, we used the analysis done by Euromonitor, if you are already familiar with it, you won’t be surprised, but if you’re not, then I guarantee that you will, and probably even a little disappointed. We found the remaining brands based on the top sellers in biggest markets and arranged them according to largest population and consumption of beer.

Before we begin with the list, we have to understand that “best selling” does not necessarily mean a better quality of the beer. In fact, most of the products we included here are generally described as “poor tasting”. The reason they have such great sales may be because of a combination of lower prices and great advertisement and distribution.

Asahi Super Dry (Japan)

To start off the list, we have “Asahi Super Dry”, Japan’s first dry beer. Also, because of it’s unfortunate shape, the Asahi’s building, which supposedly represents a frothing beer glass, is one of the most recognized ones in Tokio.

15. Corona (Mexico)

This is Mexico’s most popular beer in the world, but in Spain they actually call it “Coronita” because of a registered trademarks issue. The word “Corona” (crown in English) is apparently owned by the Spanish royal family which is why the brand couldn’t register that name.

14. Krombacher (Germany)

Germany’s love for beer is worldwide known, besides Oktoberfest, they also have another festivity called ‘Reinheitsgebot,’ in which they celebrate another anniversary of the Beer Purity Law. In April, they celebrated anniversary N°497.

Are you familiar with Rooster McConaughey? Probably not, but I bet you are with his brother, Matthew McConaughey. Rooster named his son Miller Lyte and when the company heard of this, they decided to gift the older McConaughey with a year’s supply of free beer.

10. Coors Light (U.S.)

Mr. Coors, founder of this particular brand, was obsessed with obtaining the perfect water for his beer, which he found at Colorado, where he created the Golder Brewery. Apparently the mountains there are the same as the ones on the beer’s label, that turns blue when the beverage is supposedly cold enough, the fact that they are both from Colorado gives credit to this theory.

9. Brahma (Brazil)

Besides their beer, Brazil is also recognized around the world for another thing: soccer, and somehow Brahma managed to mix the two in a weird way. The brand launched a limited edition a couple of months before the World Cup began, it was made from barley that actually grew in one of the soccer fields where some of the teams used to train.

8. Harbin (China)

At the middle of our ranking of the 16 Most Popular Beer In the World, we have Harbin, a chinese brand. In October of last year, the company opened the “Harbin Beer Experience Gallery”, the largest interactive beer museum in China.

This beer is available in over 70 countries. Apparently, back in 1964, someone decided to change the font of the label to make it more friendly towards women. They ended up slightly changing the letter “e” so that it appears to be smiling.

Also, during Prohibition, Budweiser was one of the few companies that had the resources to produce a beer under the 0.5% alcohol limit that was imposed at the time.

3. Bud Light (U.S.)

US most popular beer in the world actually went down not one, but two places from the 2005 ranking, where it was positioned at the top of the list. Over the past years, the brand has been working on advertising to appeal young adults. Like the one known as “Up for whatever”, in which they invited people to a party at a town called Whatever and the platforms used were Buzzfeed and Tinder.

2. Tsingtao (China)

This beer’s ingredients apparently include spring water solely  from the Laoshan Mountain, and the fact that it’s not brewed under licence means that every bottle is brewed with the exact same ingredients that they used 100 years ago.

Even then, it managed to be the best selling beer in the world. Over the past years, Snow’s growth has been constant, moving up from the 11th place that it had back in 2005 to the first.
