15 Most Underrated States in the US

In this article, we shall discuss the 15 most underrated states in the US. To skip our detailed analysis of the tourism industry in the United States in 2024, go directly and see 5 Most Underrated States in the US

US Domestic Travel Market Outlook 2024: An Analysis

Even during periods of rampant financial instability, American tourists have been willing to spend extensively on travel, even to the most underrated states in the US. According to a report by Deloitte, there is a rising enthusiasm for in-destination activities to the least-visited states and a growing interest in more diverse destinations, with more than 40 million Americans flying out of the U.S. in 2023, finally lagging pre-pandemic levels. 2023’s 40 million outbound travelers marks an 8.6% increase over 2019, the last year before the COVID-19 pandemic engulfed and stagnated the global economy, shuttering international travel. TSA-reported passenger throughput was up by an average of 12.5% year-over-year in 2023. US outbound travel was mostly concentrated in Europe and Asia, with the UK, France, Germany, Malaysia, and Indonesia receiving nearly 29.1% of the American travel market. Furthermore, in 2024, the report projects that full-year revenue per available room will likely rise 4.8% year-over-year.

There are mounting concerns that leisure travel has tapped its pent-up demand in the wake of the pandemic and amid economic turbulence, inflationary concerns, and rising interest rates, travel in the US might soon be subject to tighter budgets for consumers and corporate buyers especially in many of the least-visited states in the US. However, the Deloitte report puts these concerns to rest. According to the report, although outbound travel may see a dip, consumer intent to engage with in-destination activities, especially to some of the most underrated states in the US, has ramped up. Travelers planning to visit a domestic attraction on their holiday trips jumped up from 36% in 2023 to 43% in 2024. Even if the macroeconomic outlook worsens, the report projects that the American traveler is likely to reprioritize travel rather than forsake it completely, with more Americans deciding to ride out the storm closer to home by curtailing the distance and length of their trips.

It is because of this reason that investor sentiment around major travel ETFs has skyrocketed in recent years. Take for instance Amplify Travel Tech ETF (NYSE:AWAY) which provides investors with active access to technology equities in the American travel and tourism space like Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG), Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB), and Expedia Group Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPE). The fund seeks investment results which tend to correlate to the total return performance of the Prime Travel Technology Index NTR. The ETF has an expense ratio of 0.75% and net assets worth around $75 million. Another ETF which focuses on US travel stocks like Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG), Expedia Group Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPE) and Marriot International Inc. (NYSE:MAR) is Invesco Leisure and Entertainment ETF (NYSE:PEJ). The fund is based on the Dynamic Leisure & Entertainment Intellidex Index. The ETF is up 4.4% year-to-date. To read more on travel stocks investors are flocking to, check out our article on the 12 Best Travel Stocks To Buy Right Now.

So although investor sentiment around domestic leisure travel to the most underrated states in the US is picking up, a closer look at business travel tells a more nuanced story. According to a report by the Financial Times, the rise in video conferencing, heightened environmental concerns, and employers adamant on cutting costs has led to serious headwinds for domestic business travel in the United States. Business travel in the United States is expected to remain below pre-pandemic levels till 2026, while business travel spending is not projected to recover until 2028. Although business travel is slated to grow year-over-year through to 2027 even in many of the most underrated states in the US, the rate of growth is expected to decline. In 2024, global business travel spending is expected to reach $265.5 billion, nearly 87% of pre-pandemic levels. Domestic business travel volume is expected to hit the $442 million mark by the end of 2024, about 95% of 2019 levels. However it is pertinent to note that despite major European and American employers have cracked down on non-essential trips, business travel in the US is far from dead. Global bookings reached 70% of 2019 levels in October 2023, up 63% from April of the same year. According to Marriot International Inc. (NYSE:MAR), the average length of the business trip has increased by more than 20% compared to 2019, even in many of the least-visited states.

Travel in the Age of AI: An Overview

According to McKinsey, major players in the American travel industry like Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG), Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB), and Expedia Group Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPE) are navigating the headwinds associated with domestic travel in the US by ushering in a new era of digitally enabled travel. Advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning is changing the way companies interact with customers, develop products and services, and manage operations in the most underrated states in the US. Since 2013, the average time spent on digital devices has grown by nearly 70% in the US with the pandemic only exacerbating this trend. As online experiences replace in-person contact, the industry is forced to redefine traditional travel, a fundamentally human-centric experience, to what it would look like in the digital age.

Recent advancements in technology provide an impetus for companies like Booking Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:BKNG), Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB), and Expedia Group Inc. (NASDAQ:EXPE) to reimagine their product design and delivery using AI and digitization capabilities. AI offers the travel space new ways to augment and scale capabilities like language, creativity and aesthetic judgment, potentially unlocking more than $4 trillion in annual value across industries in the most underrated states in the US. For instance, gen AI could inform a digital assistant to aid companies like Airbnb Inc, (NASDAQ:ABNB) and Marriot International Inc. (NYSE:MAR) to curate personalized itineraries during discovery and booking. It allows companies to tailor recommendations and seamlessly resolve unexpected disruptions.

With international travel to the US expected to grow at an average of 5.8% annually through to 2032 at more than double the expected growth rate of the overall economy, the US travel industry is ripe for innovation.  A study by Lufthansa Innovation Hub tracked the investment strategies of more than 60 companies and revealed that AI and machine learning represented more than 65% of all investment across hospitality, ground transportation, aviation, and online travel segments. The study reveals that investment focus on AI has increased more than 60% every year since 2018, even in some of the least-visited states. Although gen AI has not been able to garner as much excitement yet, the trajectory is on the upswing, with notable investments being made in small companies like UrbanFox, NLX and SparkCognition.

Our Methodology

To compile our list of the 15 most underrated states in the US, we first gathered data on tourist arrivals in each state in 2023 and shortlisted 25 states with the lowest tourist arrivals. Next, we decided to measure the tourist offerings in each of these 25 states. Since measuring a state’s tourist offerings is an incredibly multifaceted and complex phenomenon, we established a three-pronged criteria, with a point-based weighted approach; the criteria are premised on each state’s natural beauty (15 points), tourism infrastructure (10 points), and online reviews and ratings (5 points). We then proceeded to award each state a cumulative score according to the aforementioned criteria and selected 15 states which scored the highest points. Subsequently, we ranked each entry based on the total points scored, from lowest to highest. Where there was a tie, we broke it based on the natural beauty and tourism infrastructure of the state.

AI, Tariffs, Nuclear Power: One Undervalued Stock Connects ALL the Dots (Before It Explodes!)

Artificial intelligence is the greatest investment opportunity of our lifetime. The time to invest in groundbreaking AI is now, and this stock is a steal!

AI is eating the world—and the machines behind it are ravenous.

Each ChatGPT query, each model update, each robotic breakthrough consumes massive amounts of energy. In fact, AI is already pushing global power grids to the brink.

Wall Street is pouring hundreds of billions into artificial intelligence—training smarter chatbots, automating industries, and building the digital future. But there’s one urgent question few are asking:

Where will all of that energy come from?

AI is the most electricity-hungry technology ever invented. Each data center powering large language models like ChatGPT consumes as much energy as a small city. And it’s about to get worse.

Even Sam Altman, the founder of OpenAI, issued a stark warning:

“The future of AI depends on an energy breakthrough.”

Elon Musk was even more blunt:

“AI will run out of electricity by next year.”

As the world chases faster, smarter machines, a hidden crisis is emerging behind the scenes. Power grids are strained. Electricity prices are rising. Utilities are scrambling to expand capacity.

And that’s where the real opportunity lies…

One little-known company—almost entirely overlooked by most AI investors—could be the ultimate backdoor play. It’s not a chipmaker. It’s not a cloud platform. But it might be the most important AI stock in the US owns critical energy infrastructure assets positioned to feed the coming AI energy spike.

As demand from AI data centers explodes, this company is gearing up to profit from the most valuable commodity in the digital age: electricity.

The “Toll Booth” Operator of the AI Energy Boom

  • It owns critical nuclear energy infrastructure assets, positioning it at the heart of America’s next-generation power strategy.
  • It’s one of the only global companies capable of executing large-scale, complex EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction) projects across oil, gas, renewable fuels, and industrial infrastructure.
  • It plays a pivotal role in U.S. LNG exportation—a sector about to explode under President Trump’s renewed “America First” energy doctrine.

Trump has made it clear: Europe and U.S. allies must buy American LNG.

And our company sits in the toll booth—collecting fees on every drop exported.

But that’s not all…

As Trump’s proposed tariffs push American manufacturers to bring their operations back home, this company will be first in line to rebuild, retrofit, and reengineer those facilities.

AI. Energy. Tariffs. Onshoring. This One Company Ties It All Together.

While the world is distracted by flashy AI tickers, a few smart investors are quietly scooping up shares of the one company powering it all from behind the scenes.

AI needs energy. Energy needs infrastructure.

And infrastructure needs a builder with experience, scale, and execution.

This company has its finger in every pie—and Wall Street is just starting to notice.

Wall Street is noticing this company also because it is quietly riding all of these tailwinds—without the sky-high valuation.

While most energy and utility firms are buried under mountains of debt and coughing up hefty interest payments just to appease bondholders…

This company is completely debt-free.

In fact, it’s sitting on a war chest of cash—equal to nearly one-third of its entire market cap.

It also owns a huge equity stake in another red-hot AI play, giving investors indirect exposure to multiple AI growth engines without paying a premium.

And here’s what the smart money has started whispering…

The Hedge Fund Secret That’s Starting to Leak Out

This stock is so off-the-radar, so absurdly undervalued, that some of the most secretive hedge fund managers in the world have begun pitching it at closed-door investment summits.

They’re sharing it quietly, away from the cameras, to rooms full of ultra-wealthy clients.

Why? Because excluding cash and investments, this company is trading at less than 7 times earnings.

And that’s for a business tied to:

  • The AI infrastructure supercycle
  • The onshoring boom driven by Trump-era tariffs
  • A surge in U.S. LNG exports
  • And a unique footprint in nuclear energy—the future of clean, reliable power

You simply won’t find another AI and energy stock this cheap… with this much upside.

This isn’t a hype stock. It’s not riding on hope.

It’s delivering real cash flows, owns critical infrastructure, and holds stakes in other major growth stories.

This is your chance to get in before the rockets take off!

Disruption is the New Name of the Game: Let’s face it, complacency breeds stagnation.

AI is the ultimate disruptor, and it’s shaking the foundations of traditional industries.
