The first country on the list of the 15 most Buddhist countries in the world is Cambodia. In a recent article published by World Population Review.com together with Pew Research 2020, Cambodia has the highest percentage, with ninety-six point eight (96.8%) of people practicing Buddhism as a religion. Thus, it is considered the official religion of Cambodia. Furthermore, the history of Buddhism in Cambodia spans several successive kingdoms and empires. It was introduced in two different streams, as we all know that trade relations have been a medium for spreading influence, not only on market goods but on culture as well. The two countries, China and India, stimulated the region’s development of agriculture and irrigation, and unconsciously, these two main countries are the ones that spread and injected their beliefs through trading, merchants, and missionaries carrying the teachings of Buddhism. Resulting in how it was introduced. Although, in later history, Buddhism was not the main religion, Hinduism was. Some practices and beliefs of Hinduism remain unchanged and have gone through slight changes, such as absorbing the various Buddhist traditions. Therefore, we created a type or form of Buddhism named Theravada Buddhism. Cambodia acknowledged and gave great importance to its religion, which it considers to be its national identity. Likewise, it is reflected in the prominence that this country’s laws give to Buddhism, and it was shown in Cambodia’s Constitution that the state is required to support Buddhist schools and its declaration to be their official and national religion.
