If you want to learn about the least suicidal countries in the world, then you have come to the right place.
Suicide is never a solution to the human condition, and no one should be selfish enough to subject their loved ones through such a traumatizing event. Life is not fair, but that does not mean it is not worth living, but perhaps the countries that made it into the list will offer us a new perspective on the matter. It would definitely be naive to think that people in these countries do not have problems so they do not have a reason to commit suicide. The highest suicidal country 2016 was Italy, where 16 people per 100,000 people committed suicide. However, if you are looking for the answer to what country is most suicidal, then, the answer would be Sri Lanka. Check out 30 Countries with the Highest Suicide Rates in the World for more information.
Unfortunately, many people commit suicide. In the United States, the age-adjusted rate of suicide per 100,000 people is about 13. But fortunately, the United States is not on the list of top 10 most suicidal countries, but rather far from it. But if we were to look at depression rates by country (one of the major reasons why people commit suicide), the U.S. is not in a favorable position. According to a study, the United States almost makes it at the top of the list with 19.2 percent depressed people. Did you know that the job you do for a living can cause severe depression? Just take a look at 11 Professions with the Highest Suicide Rates in Australia, and you will understand.
Let’s talk a bit about the methodology before we head into the ‘list’ segment of this article. First, we had to collect data from reliable sources, and thankfully we found several useful sources in our research. We would like to especially thank the WHO (World Health Organization) for the report on the matter and also, the OCED (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). For additional information on the subject, we put Google’s trusty search engine through its paces as we always do.
For ranking the countries, as the title suggests we are only concerned with countries with the least suicidal tendencies, so we took note of suicides per 100,000 residents of a given country, and ranked them based on that. In essence, the lower the number of suicides per 100,000 people gets the higher the country has been placed on our list.
Without further ado, let’s see the list of 15 least suicidal countries in the world. We are starting with the last three countries on our list, which share the 13th place.
13. Egypt
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 3.1
The most common means of measuring a country’s suicidal rate is to look at reported suicide cases per 100,000 people. As you can see, per hundred thousand residents in Egypt, reported cases of suicides were only 3.1, which is really impressive and Egypt is only the first country to be featured on our list.
13. Algeria
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 3.1
At number 14 on our list of least suicidal countries in the world, we have another country from the continent of Africa. Algeria is a North African country with a fairly well-rounded economy. However, the country has a lot of catching up to do with the west, to say the least. But still, the country has a very low suicide rate of 3.1 which is rather remarkable since many developed countries of the world have much higher suicide rates.
13. Venezuela
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 3.1
Venezuela is a South American country. However, Venezuela is not really a progressive nation, as it is undergoing some serious economic problems right now. Depression among the people is indeed rising. So the figures could change in the future, but for now, Venezuela shares the same suicide rate as our two previous entrants.
12. Indonesia
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 3.0
Next up on our list of least suicidal countries in the world is Indonesia. Like Algeria and Egypt, the overwhelming majority of the population of Indonesia is Muslim. In Islam suicide is considered to be a major sin, and is forbidden under any circumstance. Of course, the terrorists claim otherwise, but that is not the issue here. However, no major studies have been done to determine whether a correlation exists between religion and suicidal tendencies, but there just might be a connection.
11. The United Arab Emirates
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 2.8
The United Arab Emirates is the birthplace of Islam itself, and naturally, the population of UAE or United Arab Emirates is predominantly Muslim. According to our findings, the suicide rates per hundred thousand residents in the United Arab Emirates is only 2.8. This Middle Eastern country is very wealthy, and it owes most of its wealth to its rich oil reserves.
10. Guatemala
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 2.7
Guatemala ranks 10th on our list of least suicidal countries in the world. It is a Central American country known for its ancient Mayan sites and massive volcanoes. However, we are more interested in the country’s suicide rate. As you can see from the numbers, the statistics positively show that this country has one of the lowest suicide rates in the world.
8. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 2.6
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is a Southern Caribbean nation comprising the main island, St. Vincent, and a chain of smaller islands. The entire atmosphere of this entire island nation is quite jolly and festive, as this is where yacht owners go to have a good time. The yacht-filled harbors and colorful pubs are there to take your troubles away and keep you smiling. No wonder the suicide rate is so low there.
8. Sao Tome and Principe
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 2.6
We are halfway through our list of 15 least suicidal countries in the world and at number 8, we yet again have another island nation, Sao Tome and Principe. But Sao Tome and Principe is not in the Caribbean anymore and rather located in the continent of Africa, near the equator. It is one of the smaller nations to be featured on the list, and the population of this island nation is less than two hundred thousand in total. As you can see, the suicide rate is low enough for us to accommodate this country into our list.
7. Pakistan
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 2.5
Pakistan is a renowned and influential country in the Asian region. Although the country has a lot of catching up to do before it can be considered a developed nation, the nation has progressed quite a lot after its independence in 1947. Pakistan is one the handful of nations that possess nuclear weapons, and that’s saying something. Again, the population of Pakistan is predominantly Muslim, and as you can see the suicide rate is fairly low.
6. Bahamas
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 1.6
At number 6 on our list of least suicidal countries in the world, we have the Bahamas. Another island nation comprising of more than 700 islands. The Bahamas is also a popular tourist destination for the affluent and the famous. We also see a massive drop in suicide rate as well from 2.5 to 1.6.
4. Jamaica
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 1.4
Jamaica takes the number 5 spot on our list of least suicidal countries in the world with merely 1.4 reported cases of suicide per hundred thousand residents. People of Jamaica, a Caribbean island nation, are known to be rather laid back and relaxed. This obviously reflects positively on the suicide rates of the country.
4. Brunei
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 1.4
Brunei is one of the richest countries in the world. Brunei is not a large nation though, as the entire population of Brunei is less than four hundred and fifty thousand people. Thanks to its rich natural and mineral resources (Oil and Gas), the country remains one of the top 10 richest countries in the world.
3. Grenada
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 0.4
The first country to have a suicide rate of less than 1 per hundred thousand is Grenada — yet another nation from the Caribbean. The entire country’s population is a tad over a hundred thousand, and it is one of the smallest countries to be featured on our list. Despite the fact that the entire country’s population is effectively less than the number of people living in a modern city, the suicide rate is really remarkable.
2. Barbados
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 0.3
From the data we found, it seems the Caribbean region is good for getting rid of depression and stress. No wonder so many tourists find these islands relaxing and refreshing. Barbados is yet again another Caribbean nation with a very low suicide rate.
1. Antigua and Barbuda
Suicide rate per 100,000 residents: 0.0
You are reading it correctly, according to the latest WHO (World Health Organization) report, there were no suicides reported in Antigua and Barbuda. If you guessed that Antigua and Barbuda is located in the Caribbean, then you are right. It seems Caribbean nations are quite resilient to suicidal thoughts and are high on life.
