The coronavirus crisis hammered the already-weakening jobs market in the U.S. and abroad. Estimates show that close to 10 million people have lost their jobs in the U.S. alone amid the coronavirus impact. Now, even as the pandemic seems to be receding and certain public places are re-opening they are seeing a shortage of staff as people being laid off during the pandemic do not want to return to work under the existing conditions (low hourly pay and little to no security).

The restaurant industry has been the most affected by staff shortages following the pandemic. As most countries went into lockdowns, restaurants had to either close doors or cut their operations. As a result tens of thousands of restaurant workers were laid off, many remaining without any security and facing eviction from their homes. Now, as the economy is re-opening, companies like McDonald’s Corp (NYSE:MCD), Dunkin’ Donuts, and Subway are looking forward to making up the lost revenue, but are unable to do so due to labor shortages. As a result they have to cut hours and keep dining rooms closed. McDonald’s Corp (NYSE:MCD) has recently announced plans to hire 20,000 people across the UK and Ireland. In the US, McDonald’s Corp (NYSE:MCD) also said it would raise wages for company-owned restaurants by an average of 10%, although it might not be enough to attract people. As to McDonald’s Corp (NYSE:MCD)’s franchised locations, they are also offering incentives. For example, one location in Illinois has recently made the headlines after promising free iPhones to new hires after 6 months of employment.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) is another behemoth struggling with labor shortages. In May, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) said it planned to hire 75,000 more warehouse workers and drivers in the US and Canada. To help attract more people, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) said new employees will be paid a starting rate of $17 per hour, and they are also promised signing bonuses.

The rapidly-changing landscape of the economy and innovative technologies also pose a challenge and offer new opportunities for the future of work. According to a report by Deloitte, automation is the biggest challenge for the workforce in the U.S. The report estimates that about 47% of the total jobs in the U.S. could be automated in the next 20 years because of AI, rue-based tasks, automated processing systems, machine learning and advanced language processing technologies. The World Economic Forum also warns that there is a growing and urgent need of narrowing the workforce gap. The Forum said in a report that companies will need to narrow this gap to survive the “fourth industrial revolution.”

Therefore, considering that automation, AI and robotics are going to amass a significant part of the workforce, then it might be a good idea to consider a career in an industry that is going to provide all these automated solutions. Especially, if we take into account that these usually are the companies with the best benefits, for example Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL), and UiPath Inc (NYSE:PATH). For example, UiPath Inc (NYSE:PATH) provides insurance, including disability and dental insurance for al its employees. Moreover, UiPath Inc (NYSE:PATH) provides parental leaves not just for mothers, but also for fathers.

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) reimburses wellness and fitness costs for its employees and provides a 401(k) plan, as well as employee stock purchase plan. Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) is known as one of the best places to work, having excellent amenities for all of its employees, as well as decent salaries and other benefits.

However, working at Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) or other tech company usually requires a special set of skills, as well as liking and understanding of certain things. Therefore, it might not be for everyone. Nevertheless, we’re certain that you can still find something to your liking if you browse through our list of fastest growing jobs in America.
