YouTube is an American online video-sharing platform headquartered in San Bruno, California. YouTube was founded by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim when they worked for PayPal. Prior to working for PayPal (NASDAQ: PYPL), Hurley studied design at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Chen and Karim studied computer science together at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. YouTube’s initial headquarters was above a pizzeria and Japanese restaurant in San Mateo, California. They created the service in February 2005. Google bought the site in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion; YouTube now operates as one of Google’s subsidiaries, and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is, as we all know, considered one of the Big Five technology companies in the U.S. information technology industry, alongside Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Facebook (NASDAQ: FB), Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT).
YouTube is a video hosting platform that allows users to upload videos which include self generated music clips, educational videos, TV clips and amateur content such as video blogging. It is also a platform for music companies and corporations to release official music videos, movie trailers and also business advertising. YouTube allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to playlists, report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users. It offers a wide variety of user-generated and corporate media videos. Most modern smartphones are capable of accessing YouTube videos, either within an application or through an optimized website.
The first YouTube video was uploaded on April 23, 2005. “Me at the Zoo” shows co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo. Today it boasts of billions of viewers each month viewing millions of videos in nearly every language on the planet. Most of the content on YouTube is uploaded by individuals, but media corporations including CBS, the BBC, Vevo, and Hulu offer some of their material via YouTube as part of the YouTube partnership program. Unregistered users can watch, but not upload, videos on the site, while registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos and add comments to videos. Many videos posted on YouTube go viral, meaning it is shared immensely and gathers a huge number of views in a short number of time. Viral videos were the main factor for YouTube’s growth in the beginning of its early days with Google, for example Evolution of Dance, Charlie Bit My Finger, David After the Dentist, and more viral videos. Age-restricted videos are available only to registered users affirming themselves to be at least 18 years old.
As of May 2019, more than 500 hours of video content are uploaded to YouTube every minute. As of October 2020, YouTube is the second-most popular website in the world, behind Google, according to Alexa Internet.
YouTube prohibits sexually explicit content, animal abuse, hate speeches, spam, any sort of disrespect etc. For example, on December 2017, youtube Logan Paul posted a video of him and his friends discovering and filming a dead body in Japan’s so-called “suicide forest.” Outrage over the video was harsh and swift. Although Paul isn’t banned from YouTube, he’s removed from its top-tier ad revenue program. He apologized, and still is one of YouTube’s most controversial stars. YouTube also prohibits uploading copyrighted material including TV shows, music videos or advertisements recorded or shot without permission. Many lawsuits have been filed against YouTube for hosting copyrighted material. YouTube is always on the lookout for deleting unauthorized content and avoiding people from leaking pirated material on YouTube. As of January 2020, the 93% of the most-watched videos were music videos.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, when most of the world was under stay-at-home orders, usage of services such as YouTube grew greatly. In response to EU officials requesting that such services reduce bandwidth as to make sure medical entities had sufficient bandwidth to share information, YouTube along with Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) stated they would reduce streaming quality for at least thirty days as to cut bandwidth use of their services by 25% to comply with the EU’s request. YouTube later announced that they will continue with this move worldwide, “We continue to work closely with governments and network operators around the globe to do our part to minimize stress on the system during this unprecedented situation”.
Google first published exact revenue numbers for YouTube in February 2020 as part of Alphabet’s 2019 financial report. According to Google, YouTube had made US$15.1 billion in ad revenue in 2019, in contrast to US$8.1 billion in 2017 and US$11.1 billion in 2018. During the third quarter of 2020 YouTube generated $5 billion in revenue. YouTube has more than 30 million music and premium paid subscribers. We believe YouTube would have been a more valuable company than Netflix (NFLX) and Disney (NYSE:DIS) if it were a stand alone business. We don’t think Alphabet is maximizing YouTube’s potential at all.
In its 15-year history, YouTube has become the undisputed king of online video. It has over 2 billion monthly users who watch hundreds of hundreds of millions of hours of content every single day. The simplicity of YouTube is one of the many reasons why it has exploded in popularity over the years. YouTube makes it so easy for content creators to share their content with a large audience. And as a result, there’s a wide range of content to choose from. So whether it’s endless beauty tutorials, product reviews, gaming channels, or hours of unboxing videos — YouTube has it all.
