In simple words, a perfusionist is the one in charge of operating the cardiopulmonary bypass machine while a heart surgery is ongoing. However, this is not the only task that perfusionists have, since they also need to make sure that the machine is properly functioning, so they are able to follow the patient’s metabolic and physiologic state during the surgery. In order to become eligible to do this job, you must get a degree in cardiovascular perfusion or perfusion technology, which will take you four years. Overall, this is a very appreciated and very well paid job.
