Europe, known as “the old continent” surely does not match the description in innovation as the 11 most technologically advanced countries in Europe will show you. For a broader view on the degree of technological advancement you could also take a look at our list of the 10 most technologically advanced countries in the world.
Back to Europe, though. The continent is also known as the birthplace of western culture and a great deal of the science we use today. As most of you may know, the industrial revolution started off in the UK in the end of the eighteenth century and then went on to take over the world and shape it as we see it today to a great extent. Technology and advanced engineering was becoming a familiar matter of study for the more advanced European countries in times when some of the leaders we know today either did not exist at all (the USA), or were still in their feudal periods (Japan). However, the two world wars greatly contributed to Europe’s leadership in global technological affairs and crippled the economies of each and every country on the continent for decades. However, nowadays things look a lot better with some of the global leaders in technology and innovation nested on European ground.
The continent also has a very promising and closely observed by everyone interested leading spot in medical technology and innovation. This was recently taken to a controversial extent with an Italian neurosurgeon being the sole candidate for a planned head transplant, an operation the likes of which have never been done before on any being successfully.
11. Spain
First off on the list is Spain. The country takes the eleventh place because while it is strongly technologically equipped and able today, Spain’s scientific research has been hindered by the Catholic church for as recently as the first half of the last century. However, scientists and engineers today are highly valued assets.
10. Italy
Our tenth contender, Italy, was already mentioned as the hotspot of head transplant controversy. A popular neurosurgeon from the country aims to carry the sci-fi-like operation in 2017. However, this is planned to happen either in the USA or in China because of their laws and facilities.
9. Norway
Norway takes the ninth place as a country which strives to implement technology in everything in its public sector. From the simplest daily logistics problems to replacing their physical currency with a digital one, Norway is set to bring the future closer.
8. Netherlands
The Netherlands, despite its aged and classical architecture, hides a very prominent technological development behind its facade. The country’s innovativeness is mainly manifested in its ways of harnessing renewable energy sources and preventing flooding while making use of the water.
7. France
France takes the seventh spot as the world’s leader in nuclear energy and related technology and engineering. Aside from that, France is the birthplace of photography, the inventions that gave us the internal combustion engines and much more.
6. Denmark
Denmark takes the sixth spot on the list of the 11 most technologically advanced countries in Europe as a leader in clean energy and its increasing importance as a biotechnology researcher.
5. Germany
Germany is all about technology and even more about excellent, no-compromise engineering which has given the country its well-deserved fame.Germany has been the home of some of the most important figures in science throughout history too.
4. Finland
Finland takes the fourth place in Europe and comes at a similar ranking in when talking about worldwide technology. After all, Finland is the home of the one and only Nokia Corporation which, while not so much today, was a moving force in the world of electronics.
3. Switzerland
Our third contender is Switzerland which is the country without the contribution of which many modern discoveries would not be made. You may know Switzerland for Einstein but while it is a little-known fact, Switzerland manufactures many integral components, such as the motors that power NASA’s first successful Mars rover.
2. United Kingdom
The UK ranks among the top 10 in raw scientific output globally and takes the second place in this list of the most technologically advanced in Europe. While being the birthplace of Alan Turing, the man who gave us what we know today as computers, the United Kingdom also excels in numerous other branches of science.
1. Sweden
Sweden takes the crown in the list of the 11 most technologically advanced countries in Europe. While it does contribute to the massive leaps in science, Sweden differs from the previous countries by having an absolutely impeccable technological infrastructure from cellphone coverage to home internet.
