11. Shintoism

Shinto is the most popular religion in Japan, and it is believed that more than 80% of Japan’s population practices it. Despite this, there are not many people identifying themselves as adherents of Shintoism in surveys. One of the reasons for this is that there are different meanings of Shinto in Japan, and people tend to visit the shrines but don’t consider themselves to belong to the institutional religion of Shintoism. Shinto doesn’t have sacred books or texts but instead has books with stories about Shinto beliefs.
