3. Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology is included in our top three most intellectually challenging, cerebral medical specialties in the US for a good reason —  it is the practice of medicine which involves the perioperative care of patients and the treatment of unbearable pain. As a hospital-based specialty, it is focused on both operative and post-operative patients’ medical care. The practice of anesthesiology involves a wide scale of patients regardless of age, illness, and sex. The specialist must also be expert in subspecialties such as pediatric, cardiac, neuro and ambulatory anesthesia. Critical care medicine and pain management are also included. According to some medical statistics, a great number of medical students interested in anesthesiology are those who enjoy physiology and applied pharmacology in the clinical background. What makes this medical specialty so complex is four years of residency training program (plus a Clinical Base (PGY-1) Year), as well as training in internal medicine or emergency medicine, pediatrics, some field of surgical specialties, critical care medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, neurology, family practice, or some combination of these.
