Named after Rajiv Gandhi, a former Prime Minister and son of Indira Gandhi, it is the main airport in Hyderabad area and 6th among largest and busiest airports in India. His widow Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation stone for the airport in 2005 and it was opened in 2008.
