10. Project MKUltra
Back in the day there were many theories running wild regarding the various experiments the CIA was conducting in its basements. One of them involved mind control experiments run on US citizens, as if it mattered where they were from, really.
The theory said that this happened between the 1950s and the 70s. But theory turned real when President Bill Clinton actually issued an apology on behalf of the US government, acknowledging the situation.
The CIA was apparently experimenting with drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, electronics, torture and all sorts of abuse. Their goal was to make people do what they wanted them to do, which is, essentially, a type of mind control.
The experiments took place in institutions, prisons, hospitals and more, in total about 80 locations. No wonder rumors started swirling about what the CIA was doing given the extent of the operation.
The MKUltra was exposed when a series of 20,000 documents were unclassified in 1977 thanks to the request under the Freedom of Information Act. The problem was that not all was exposed because a good part of the files had been destroyed by a former CIA director in 1973.
