8. Alcazar de Colon (tie)
Activities: Historical Tour, Sightseeing
Alcazar de Colon is the castle built by Christopher Columbus’ son Diego, who was the Viceroy of La Espanola. This castle-turned-museum is a great piece of history, having survived everything that’s battered it since it was built in the 16th century. This includes pirate raids and hurricanes plus squatters and the usual vandalization. What’s more interesting is its architecture. It was designed in Gothic-Mudejar style and has been restored three times to bring back its former glory. It sits on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Santo Domingo. This is one educational tour you cannot miss!
