10. Micronesia

A small country comprising over 600 islands, Micronesia has been receiving unwanted attention for its 45.8% obesity rate, and an interesting thing is that the country’s diet trends and foods are imported mainly from the US, which may be a factor in the high obesity rate.

9. Kiribati

Kiribati has an obesity rate of 46%, where lack of awareness of the devastation that obesity can wreak is one of the reasons behind the high obesity rate, in addition to differences in food and shape related attitudes.

8. Samoa

Many countries in the Pacific area are quite obese, and Samoa is no exception with an obesity rate of 47.3%, which is why there is a much higher presence of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases as well.

7. Tonga

Like I said, Pacific Islands are the worst area in the world for obesity and the reasons are often the import of fatty foods from developed countries. In Tonga, 40% of the population has type 2 diabetes and one of the main reasons behind this is the import of cheap meat full of fat from New Zealand, known as mutton flaps, which is consumed across the country.

6. Niue

81.7% of people in Niue are overweight, and it has an obesity rate of 50%. There’s a reason why its life expectancy is only 70 years, and even that is boosted by females.

5. Tuvalu

51.6% of people in Tuvalu are obese, and if anyone guessed the Pacific as the location for Tuvalu, you have earned yourself a pat on the back. Women actually have a higher percentage of obesity as compared to men in the country, but it is obvious that a lot more needs to be done to control this issue.

A low life expectancy of 70 years is prevalent in Marshall Islands, which has an obesity rate of 52.9%.

3. Palau

55.3% of Palau is obese. Another country in the Pacific, you would think that people living on islands would be quite fit, but the truth is the complete opposite. 78.4% of the over 15 years of age population of Palau is at the very least overweight.

2. Cook Islands

While an obesity rate of 55.3% is alarming on its own, Cook Islands has a population where 90.9% of the people are overweight and obese, which basically means nearly everyone in the country is at the very least, overweight. Cook Islands is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but now also by far one of the fattest.

1. Nauru

Topping the list of 10 most obese countries in the world is Nauru, where 61% of the population is obese, while the total overweight percentage is also the highest in the world, at 94.5%, which is why it has extremely low life expectancy rates for males, at just 60.6 years. 97% of the men are overweight while so are 93% of the women.
