5. Essar Shipping
Founded in 1945 and based in Mumbai, Essar Shipping, the number five on our list of largest shipping companies in India is a public Ltd. Company, which forms part of the Bombay Stock Exchange. From a metrics standpoint, the firm is the fourth-largest shipping company in all of India in terms of revenue and total assets. On the business side of things, Essar provides an array of services, which range from crude oil and bulk cargo shipping to contract drilling. It does this in large part with the aid of its 26-vessel fleet, which enables the firm to handle 355,000 tons of dry bulk cargo and 320,000 barrels of petroleum products. Among all of these impressive feats, perhaps the most impressive is the company’s attention to detail. In 1995, Essar became the first Indian firm to receive the International Safety Management Code (ISM), providing further proof that although Essar has what it takes to be one of the largest shipping companies in India, it still values the safety of its nearly 400 employees above all else.
