Running out of ideas of costumes right before a party is something that’s perfectly normal and something that all of us go through unless we have a running character obsession, so we thought we’d help everyone out and present some of the 10 easiest fictional characters to dress up as.
Whether you’re already thinking of next year’s Halloween party or someone’s throwing a costume party for some reason, we’ve got you covered. Even if it’s a cosplay idea you’re looking for, this list should help you get into character without spending a ton of cash. And, if after reading this list, you still feel like you need more ideas, don’t worry we got you covered with 10 Easiest Celebrities to Dress Up As, as well.
We thought that for this list we should include costumes that are easy to put together with what you have around the house. Sure, you might have to go out and buy a thing or two, but you’re not going to have to spend hundreds of dollars if we’re only talking about a bit of makeup and a T-shirt. Some of them require a bit more work than others, such as extensive makeup or a bit of research in finding a certain colored pair of pants (the Joker, right?).
It should be mentioned, of course, that you don’t have to respect these costumes to a T because it’s all about having fun. You can also play around a bit and see what other images you’ll find online of these characters, where they were maybe dressed a bit differently, in order to put together a slightly different costume. This should be quite handy, especially since we discuss here only the most popular versions of the costumes, not the variations too.
For instance, we have the Joker on our list of easiest fictional characters to dress up as, which is a bit of a spoiler, but not really a surprise. Well, traditionally, he’s dressed in purple and green and wears tons of make-up. Jared Leto plays him a bit differently in the latest Suicide Squad movie – you can go with a black suit, green hair paint and thick golden jewelry, for instance. That’s just an example of an alternative as to how you can play up your costume in case it’s easier for you to find the items you need around the house or in your best friend’s closet.
So, without further ado, here are the 10 easiest fictional characters to dress up as.
10. Jay and Silent Bob
You know Jay and Silent Bob from a gazillion movies. They’ve appeared in most of Kevin Smith’s movies, and that’s pretty normal since he portrays Silent Bob. The two characters are laid back dudes, smoking pot in front of the local convenience store. They first appeared in 1994 in Clerks and the madness surrounding them has only grown since then.
So what do you need to get into character? For Jay, you can get away with a black or yellow hoodie, a long blonde wig, and a black beanie, while for Silent Bob you need a black or brown trench coat, a long black wig, a cap worn backwards and some facial hair. Simple as that and easy to throw on at the last minute. And now, let’s see who else we have in our list of easiest fictional characters to dress up as.
9. Harry Potter
Is there anyone that hasn’t heard of Harry Potter yet? Go back to your cave if you haven’t! Moving on. The world of Harry Potter is an extensive one, with dozens of characters. Of course, there are the three main ones – Harry, Ron, and Hermione – but there are so many secondary characters to choose from that you don’t even have to work too hard. Just pick your favorite or the one that looks most like you.
When it comes to costume, you do things in two different manners – choose an extremely detailed, spot-on, costume, or just the laid back version. What does the latter one involve? Well, for Harry Potter that means drawing a lightning bolt on your forehead, picking a pair of round glasses, a black robe type of clothing and a wand. That’s similar for Hermione, although you probably need a wig for that one and, of course, you can drop the glasses and the face makeup.
8. Misty & Ash
With the rise of Pokemon Go, it’s impossible not to know who Misty and Ash are. Proficient trainers, the two are incredibly easy to dress up as. If you’re going for Ash, then a simple pair of jeans, a black t-shirt, blue shirt and a red and white cap are all you need. If you’re going as Misty, then a pair of blue jeans shorts, a yellow crop top and suspenders will complete your look. Just don’t forget the two ponytails to be on point. No wonder they are on the list of easiest fictional characters to dress up as, right?
7. Powerpuff Girls
Most of us grew up watching the Powerpuff Girls and they’ve stuck with us through the years. The girls are incredibly easy to dress up as for any party, especially if you’re going with your girlfriends in order to complete the trip.
So, what do you need to for the number 7 in our list of easiest fictional characters to dress up as? Well, you need a green dress for Buttercup, a pink one for Blossom and a light blue one for Bubbles. Pair those with black belts and appropriate hairdos and wigs (if necessary), and you’ve got your costume complete. You can add white stockings and black flats if you want to be really accurate about it all, but you can probably forgo the stockings and even pick stilettos if you’re feeling like it.
6. Han Solo
Up next in our list of easiest fictional characters to dress up as is Han Solo, who is pretty much a legendary character, thanks to Harrison Ford on the one hand and to the entire franchise on the other. He’s been a fan favorite for many decades and thankfully it’s extremely easy to dress up as the famous captain of the Millennium Falcon.
What do you need? Black boots, black pants, a white or cream long sleeved shirt with a little cleavage on top, a black vest and a toy gun to match. Just don’t forget to channel Solo’s attitude, though.
5. Waldo / Wally
First published back in the late 80s, the Where’s Wally (or Where’s Waldo in the USA) book series for children is particularly famous. That’s because the book consists of extremely detailed illustrations depicting dozens and dozens of people out of which you have to spot Wally (or Waldo).
How can you dress up like him? Well, that’s easy. A blue pair of jeans (or other pants), a red and white striped shirt, a red and white hat and a pair of round glasses. If you want to complete the look you can also add a walking cane, but that’s rather optional and depends on whether you’re 100 percent sure you’re not going to forget it at whatever party you’re attending. And now, let’s see the top four on our list of easiest fictional characters to dress up as.
4. Mario & Luigi
Perhaps the best-known video game duo, Mario and Luigi were developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo. Over the past three decades, the two have become fan favorites and have appeared in over 200 video games. Dressing as the two of them isn’t difficult at all. If you don’t want to buy one of the already-made costumes available online, you can go with a pair of blue overalls, a green (for Luigi) or red (for Mario) shirt and hat and a mustache. That’s it. You can probably wear any type of shoes with this, though sneakers go best (and they can be found cheap).
3. American Psycho
Arguably one of the best-known black comedy – horror movies in the world, 2000’s American Psycho features the famous Christian Bale in the chilling role of Patrick Bateman, a serial killer and businessman. You can probably pull the costume off even if you choose to dress up in a smart suit and slick your hair back, but not everyone will recognize you. If you want to be an instant hit, just pick a white transparent rain coat, some fake blood, and a toy axe. Pull some crazy faces, and you’re done.
2. The Joker
Is there anyone in the world who hasn’t heard of the Joker? The DC supervillain loves to make Batman’s life a living hell and his appearance is quite striking, which means you’ll instantly be recognized. Over the years, the character has been brilliantly played by actors such as Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and, most recently, Jared Leto, each managing to capture a specific set of personality traits. Dressing up as the Joker is a bit of work, but not that much. All you need is some purple pants and jacket, a shirt, a green vest and loads of face paint, plus some red lipstick.
1. Indiana Jones
Somehow we’re up to another Harrison Ford character, but we couldn’t be happier since this one is also extremely easy to dress up as. Have you figured it out yet? Well, it’s Indiana Jones, of course. The character appeared back in 1981 and has been a chosen character for costume parties ever since. What do you need? Well, a pair of light beige pants, a dark shirt, a brown leather jacket and a similarly colored hat and some accessories. For instance, you can add a toy gun and a whip tied to your hip.
