However, what may be more damaging in the long-term for Canada is syphilis, since the rate of this disease has been increasing significantly over the past few years. It is true though, that the numbers may actually be misleading. For example, it is thought that now more people are getting tested for STDs and more laboratories are performing these tests, which has led to more diseases being detected.
