We love film festivals, and there are many happening around the world almost the whole year. We list the 10 biggest and most important today; the ones where the most people come to, and the biggest stars attend. Some of the festivals you might be familiar with, or love attending didn’t make the cut, just because we looked for the biggest ones.

10. Dubai International Film Festival

Dubai is the modern metropolis who grew from the desert, becoming more and more attractive by the year. The International Film Festival in Dubai started in 2004, and since then it grew rapidly (like everything in this city last years) to a level enough for entering our list of the biggest film festivals in the world. The festival is being held from December 10th to 17th. Many major movie stars appeared on the festival.

9. Zurich Film Festival

European newcomer earned the ninth place on our list of the biggest festivals in the world. It is being held from September 25th to October 5th. Gala events and premieres of the major movies occur at the festival; this is an event that has a special emphasis on European films, especially ones coming from Germany.

8. International Film Festival Rotterdam

Big cinema event in Rotterdam attracts film lovers from around the world from January 25th to February 5th. From movie experts and critics, to passionate movie fanatics, everybody goes to Rotterdam for premiere screening of newest movies. Average of 350,000 viewers attend the event, making the solid #8 on our list of biggest film festivals in the world.

7. Sundance Film Festival, Park City, Utah

The biggest and most important film festival in the US; if you’re a movie freak, Sundance is a place to be in Utah during January-February period. Several cities in Utah showcase newest films, especially from less-known directors, alongside most anticipated titles in American cinema. Started in 1978, the festival awards several categories of films, and has many non-competition sections as well.

6. Melbourne International Film Festival

This is the biggest film festival in the whole southern hemisphere. A festival with the long tradition, and great presentation, Melbourne International Film Festival presents many prestigious awards.  From 1952, MIFF awards many genres and interactive projects in the industry. MIFF is one of the most crowded festivals, held from July 30th to August 16th.

5. Seattle International Film Festival

Since 1976, SIFF is a festival featuring a diverse film genres and projections of different types of movies and documentaries. The most prestigious award which can be won by a film on this festival is Golden Space Needle, for the most popular movie, and it’s voted by the audience. SIFF runs from July 17th, and the durations are different every year, around 20 days on average.

4. Toronto International Film Festival

TIFF was found in 1976, and since then it grew to the stage of a prestigious world event, and the biggest of this kind in Canada. The awards like “People’s Choice” and “The Best Canadian Feature Film” are given to the winners of this festival. From the first Monday in September and for next 11 days, around 40 screens, and nearly 450,000 attendees on average speak for themselves; this is one of the biggest film festivals in the world, and it earned #7 on our list for a reason.

3. Berlin International Film Festival

Among the most popular and most-visited festivals in Europe, and the whole world, Berlin International Film Festival is a member of “Big Three”, alongside Cannes and Venice. One of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema, the Golden Bear, is given to the winner of the best film on BIFF. The festival happens every year from February 5th to 15th.

2. Venice Film Festival

The difference between the winner of the list and runner-up is really minor today. Venice Film Festival is the top anticipated film event every year; the place where everybody from film industry gathers to experience the newest work of art directors from around the world. Venice is the place where some of the biggest world premieres are held, and many films that score well in Venice, tend to win most awards on every other festival in the world.

Even though the Cannes festival is known as the largest, and festival of innovations, the system of rating is traditional, and didn’t chang for a decade. The name “Cannes” resembles quality and latest top performance in the film industry nowadays.
