When you’re burnt to a crisp and need some relief from the beach, just visit any of the remarkable Roman buildings and fortresses.

Grassy rolling hills sprinkled with charming homes and architectural wonders. The Pena Palace is an example of such a wonder with its very apparent resemblance to Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle. Other fortresses and palaces are dotted throughout the town as the Sintra Mountains loom in the distance.

Here’s a fantastic historic center on this hilltop, and the main attraction is the medieval castle on display. The entire town is surrounded by a fortified wall encasing the castle and a slew of walkable streets with quaint cafes, adorable boutiques, and bustling crowds walking along the mazed cobblestoned streets.
7. Coimbra
Medieval structures flank the streets in this former capital. It’s said to be one of the most romantic cities in the country, and you certainly feel some romance overlooking the River Mondego from shore. The popular university is an attraction in itself, but the other medieval locations are also picturesque.

Does the name remind you of anything? How about port wine? This world famous port wine hub is settled on the Douro River, and the metal bridge will bring you over to the nearby Vila Nova de Gaia. As you wander the streets of Porto you will encounter a lively musical scene at the Ribeira along with a pedestrian-friendly area full of excellent cafes, restaurants and vendors selling their good on the streets.

This idyllic spot isn’t called the “Floating Garden of the Atlantic” for nothing. This incredible location has flowers gardens galore and greenery that goes on for miles and miles. Wine to sip on, churches and fortresses, excellent restaurants and a promenade to admire the ocean views from.
4. Azores
Nine volcanic islands make up this incredibly stunning archipelago floating in the Atlantic Ocean. The whale watching here is some of the best in the world, and each island sports it’s own flair. Seaside towns, great beaches, hot springs, and mountains vistas are just a few of the perks.

Over 2,000 years old, you bet Evora is a cultural and historical hub of the country. The amount of antiquity held here would take you thousands of years to see if you saw a new one every day. The Old Town is quite well-maintained and the old Roman structures and temples are a huge appeal for any history seeking tourist.
2. Aveiro
Another location on earth that’s similar to Venice, Italy is here at Aveiro. The canals weave their ways through the city, so take your gondola under bridges, and through a picture-perfect scene for a wonderful day activity.
