6. Belgium
Think of Belgian cuisine, and no doubt it is moules-frites which springs to mind, but this tiny Benelux country has more to its culinary repertoire – and over 100 Michelin-starred restaurants. Street stalls selling hot waffles (gaufres) topped with anything from whipped cream to chopped strawberries will make anyone with a sweet tooth drool, and that’s before we’ve got onto the chocolate! There are more than 2,000 chocolate shops in this country of only 11 million people and if you’re in the country that invented praline, we defy you not to sample a box. If savory dishes are more your thing, try waterzooi – a hearty stew usually made with chicken or fish – and wash it down with a glass of famous Belgian beer!
