Want to know which are the countries that cheat the most? Without a doubt, infidelity is one of the most difficult human related fields to research. Cheating is such a secretive practice that gathering accurate information about it is extremely hard, especially in countries with very conservative governments and/or beliefs. Moreover, morals tend to get in the way of the truth, for we cannot be 100% sure that the answers people give about cheating are entirely honest; many feel the need to hide the truth, even though most surveys are completely anonymous. In addition, the definition of ‘infidelity’ varies around the world; cheating is definitely not unambiguous as far as what different people perceive as cheating. All in all, the available data on infidelity worldwide is based on estimates.
Although we’re living in the twenty-first century, sexuality is still a taboo topic in many countries around the world: Russia with its orthodox church and its conservative government, Muslim countries with their strict sexual policies, Catholic nations which are still very much non-progressive… Nevertheless, sex will always be one of the most natural acts of human life. Hence, the curiosity surrounding its practices, habits, and numbers will never cease. If you find this topic intriguing you should definitely check out our list on The 10 Most Sexually Active Countries in the World and find out if your homeland made the cut, and compare the two lists to see what correlation sexual activity in general may have with cheating in particular.
In compiling this list we used the data gathered by a renowned condom manufacturer, which interviewed over 29,000 people in 36 countries around the world. The survey carried out by Durex posed questions on many aspects of sexuality, including infidelity. One of their general findings is that between 50% and 65% of husbands and 40% to 55% of wives have affairs before they turn forty. As you can see, the chosen definition of ‘cheating’ in the survey was that of adultery, i.e. sexual intercourse with a person who is not your spouse. The problem that we encountered with this and other surveys is that their findings were divided according to gender; instead of rating infidelity as a human practice, researchers chose to analyze cheating rates in men and women separately. So, we had no choice but to select one set of results. In the end, we picked female infidelity, to show that it is a practice ubiquitous for humankind as a whole, and not only limited to men.
