There are plenty of places to see in Thailand before you die, but most of us don’t have enough time to see them all. Spending years in the country will still bring you to add more places to your list; it’s never ending. So what’s up in Thailand? What is there to do and see? Well, what isn’t there is more like the question!
Are you a mountain feel-good hippy? Awesome, head up north. With places like Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, there are mountains galore and that means plenty of hiking opportunities. The incredible forests hold flora and fauna to be discovered and trails for any and all levels. This area also holds some of the country’s most revered temples like Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai.
Into temples, but prefer to learn more about the faraway past? Ayutthaya is the country’s old capital and holds temple ruins sprinkled about the city. The nearby Khao Yai National Park will provide you with more phenomenal views and opportunities to be one with nature. This is an excellent jaunt to get out of the crazy city of Bangkok.
Speaking of Bangkok, I hope you’re a city slicker because this is one mammoth destination. Get your shopping done and discover the temples, grimy alleys, and chic bars of the capital. When it’s time to get away and let your thoughts float away into oblivion, there’s no better place than the scenic beaches and islands of Thailand. Some of these islands are truly the best places to visit in Thailand for kids and families, so don’t think it’s for couples and young travelers only.
There’s so much to experience in Thailand, it’s hard to believe there can be only eight. So instead of thinking this is a comprehensive list, think about it as only the start of your list of the best places to see in Thailand before you die.
,
8. Bangkok
The largest city and capital of Thailand is a hectic whirlwind, but well worth the intense experience. Everything from the largest weekend market in the world, Chatuchak Market, to glamorous nightclubs, to backpacker digs, fancy schmancy sky bars, and traffic beyond your imagination can be found here. Go temple wandering, shopping, and eat until your tummy begs you to stop.
7. Krabi
Krabi Town is the hub for the Andaman Islands and incredible mainland beaches. So take a gander at the small town if you’d like, but the real attractions are closer to the sea. Ao Nang and Railay are the most popular mainland gems with their limestone rocks performing a spectacular sight, and taking a dilapidated longtail boat to the surrounding islands will be well worth your time. Snorkel with the fish and visit the National Parks. This is certainly one of the best places to see in Thailand before you die.
6. East Coast Islands
I’m “saving room” on the list by grouping three island together here. The popular specs of sand to the east don’t boast the breathtaking limestone rocks, but they have their own charm for sure. Koh Tao is for the diving enthusiasts, the partiers can relish on the island of Koh Phangan, and the bit higher class and families on a getaway might enjoy Koh Samui a bit more.
5. Ayutthaya
It would be a shame to visit Bangkok and miss out on Ayutthaya. A mere one-hour bus ride and you can be exploring temples around the old ancient capital. These temples are different from the majority of what you will see around the country. The ruins date back hundred of years and are humbling to be in the presence of.
4. Khao Yai National Park
Another spot only a few hours away from Bangkok is Khao Yai. This national park boasts elephants and deers roaming freely, waterfalls, one of which was featured in the famous movie, “The Beach,” and excellent hiking trails and camping spots.
3. Chiang Rai
Here’s where the Golden Triangle is located. Come here to see the Mekong slice through and separate Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. This city also holds the revered white temple, Wat Rong Khun. Go for a trek in the mountains if that’s more your thing.
2. Kanchanaburi
Here is where you can learn more about WWII at the Jeath War Museum and see the train tracks that are still in use today, called the Death Railway. Although depressing, the site is quite beautiful. To lift your spirits, a visit to the gorgeous Erawan Waterfall is in order. This is one of the nicest waterfalls in the country.
1. Chiang Mai
The bustling city of Chiang Mai, one of the country’s largest cities, is a cultural hub with everything and anything under the sun, yet still maintaining a pretty chill atmosphere for a big city. You won’t find high rises here, and the Old City is very much walkable. Just outside the city are lush landscapes full of greenery and mountains with hiking trails for days. Be prepared for temple overload as the streets are littered with hundreds of them.
