Appearances do matter in the world we live in so we thought it would be fun to rank states with the ugliest women in America. If your state is among the ugliest states in America, it doesn’t mean that you, your family members or friends are ugly.
Everyone enjoys a sight of something beautiful. It is an inherent part of our very nature. We have to satisfy our aesthetic needs much like we have to satisfy physiological needs. That is why we listen to Beethoven’s „Moonlight Sonata“, why we enjoy the sight of aurora borealis. It is our insatiable need for beauty that makes us forget about social behavior code while staring at the alluring face of a woman passing by on the street. The chances that you will be captivated by women’s beauty are higher if you decide to visit one of the countries with the most beautiful women in the world. It’s a different story if you happen to be in one of the countries with the ugliest women in the world.
So, we tend to claim that beauty is a matter of subjective perception, but studies have shown that many of us find the same things beautiful. Ancient Greeks believed that beauty is embodied in Golden Ratio, 1:1.618. A study on attractiveness conducted in 2003 has found a new „golden ratio“ – 0.36, which is one element of key facial dimensions based on true Golden Ratio. Interestingly enough, symmetry in the face does not imply beauty. The fact is that a perfectly symmetrical face would appear unnatural to us. The shape of the face, skin tone, age, distinctiveness of facial features and emotions the face portrays all together play the role in our perception of someone’s beauty.

The media nowadays plays a great role in our perception of human beauty. Western standard of beauty is imposed on us as an ideal. Women who come from states on our list do not seem to be bothered attaining this ideal. Other parts of the world have embraced different standards which we perceive as being strange and certainly not as embodying beauty. Most of us would frown upon the sight of ‘lotus’ feet – a body modification practiced in China whereby girl’s feet were bound tightly in order to prevent them from growing. The feet modified in this way were regarded as sexually appealing. I imagine we would be distressed upon seeing stretched lips of a Mursi woman. Apparently, in some parts of Ethiopia stretching a woman’s lips with lip disks is a beauty standard that helps a girl evolve into a woman. Most likely, these women would have the same reaction upon seeing the procedure of getting botox injected into lips or the corrective procedures such as buttock augmentation.
When creating the list of states with the ugliest women in America we referred to the ranking of state representatives on the most famous beauty pageant in the USA since 1952, Miss USA for Miss World. We considered how many state representatives were awarded titles Miss USA or Miss America, whether they ended up being 2nd, 3rd or 4th runner, and how many of them entered top 10 or top 15. Given that body shape and size also play a role in the perception of beauty, we have taken into account the results of a study which analyzed the obesity rate for women in each state. We considered the opinions on the beauty of American women which discussion board users expressed on tiger droppings and letsrun.com. So, dear reader, don’t take this list of states with the ugliest women in America too seriously. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?
