Which are the sexiest accents in the world?
Each individual is unique and has its own likes and passions, especially when it comes to the people they’re dating. Something that seems to be attractive all around the world is a sexy accent so we tried to figure out just which are the sexiest accents in the world.
Attraction is subjective and unique to each person, but I’m sure we can all understand finding a certain accent to be quite sexy and likable. Even so, it’s probably going to depend heavily on the person (talking with an accent), their looks, their voice, their personality and so on. It is safe to say, however, that not all accents are created equal, to play a bit on a famous saying, and that some have more fans than others.
In trying to find out why accents are considered sexy, there’s little scientific evidence, as you’d expect. There are theories, however, indicating that it probably has something to do with the sense of adventure that comes with speaking to someone with an accent, someone that obviously isn’t from around there and that could whisk you away on a trip around the world. Fine, we know it’s not realistic thinking, but there’s little rationale behind the attraction.
Other theories indicate that it’s not even a conscious decision we make to like a certain accent, but that it has more to do with finding a good mate, one that comes from a different region. As mentioned, these are just people’s theories and we can probably make some others up on the spot just for fun. In the end, it doesn’t really matter, does it?
You can also check out another list we have put together of the 6 most widely spoken languages in Europe, where you’ll identify quite a few of the accents we’re going to talk about in the following paragraphs.
In trying to find out which were the sexiest accents in the world we went searching high and low through the Internet, looking for surveys, polls and articles on the topic. We’ve identified 7 different rankings published in the past couple of years, including the famous Global Dating Survey from Time Out.
We crosschecked the languages on all the lists, offering each a point for every site they were mentioned on. Then, we checked out the rankings on said sites, giving the most points to the most popular accents and the least to the ones lagging behind. In the end, we put two and two together and got the final list. So, carry on if you want to see which are the 11 sexiest accents in the world.
11. Welsh
Points – 4
Wales is a country that’s part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain. It’s right in between England and the Irish Sea. The language that some 3 million residents speak is Welsh and it’s one of the Celtic languages spoken natively in the area.
Even so, it’s beginning to look like it’s a disappearing language as only about 580,000 people still speak it, according to the 2011 UK Census.
The history of the language sits in the 6th century when it took off from Common Brittonic. Over the ages, it evolved into its current state, slowly declining in popularity as more and more residents picked up British English and stuck with it.
Nowadays, hearing someone talk with a Welsh accent seems to be quite sexy. Hopefully, it will remain so for many years to come, and the number of speakers will increase instead of the other way around.
10. Swedish
Points – 6
Ah, the Swedes. Still in Europe, we find Sweden, home of Ikea, the Skarsgård clan of hunky actors and one sexy language. Among the Nordic languages, Swedish seems to sound the best, which has been recognized by people all over the world.
Swedish is spoken natively by around 9 million people, which is too little if we’re being honest. Alas, there’s little we can do considering that’s all the locals in the country. This is a North Germanic language, descending from Old Norse, which is basically the language the Vikings of old used to speak.
9. South American
Points – 7
Yes, we know there are multiple languages spoken in South America, but it was fairly easy to rank them this way since some lists present them as such, while others will rank Brazilian Portuguese or Argentina’s Spanish accent among the list.
Geographically and historically, things are a bit complicated in South America. Here, languages are reminiscent of the colonial powers that once occupied the lands, which means we’ll find Spanish, Portuguese, English, French and Dutch on the continent, in various proportions. To this list we’re going to add the aboriginal languages that exist in the area, which are too many to count.
Overall, however, the accents of South America have an added sexy vibe thanks to the stereotypes tied to the Latino men and women and their sexuality.
8. American
Points – 11
There we go, we reached the American accent. “What accent?” you’re going to ask. Well, in short, men and women around the world are quite in lust with the southern accent. Living in Texas and nearby states? Well, you’re surely going to make some foreigners happy when speaking to them. You might even make other Americans happy too, as they find the accent quite sexy. It must be all the twang laced voiced that pushed the American accent so high up.
7. Scottish
Points – 11
Going back to the British Isles, we find the Scots and their sexy language. There are several language versions, depending on the area you’re in, but in the end it doesn’t really matter all that much – a Scottish accent is a Scottish accent to untrained ears.
The number of native speakers isn’t all that high, but there are over a million and a half second level speakers. Even so, according to a study run by the Scottish Government a few years back it seems that more than half of the respondents didn’t really think that Scots was a language at all. That won’t deter all those who find the accent sexy, however.
6. Spanish
Points – 12
Spoken by hundreds of millions of people all over the world, Spanish is one of the sexiest languages out there. It’s not only the language that is found so pleasant by people, but also the speakers themselves. This is tightly tied to the romanticized views set by the novellas of the past few decades, painting the men as sexy Latinos that will sweep you off your feet and the women as fiery Latinas that will make you fall in love with them.
There is something impossibly sexy about the Spanish accent and people have stopped wondering just what it is exactly that attracts them to it and simply embraced it. I guess no one is surprised to see it on this list of sexiest accents in the world.
5. Australian
Points – 14
When you think or Australia you think of the country where you can surf the waves, lay in the sun on beautiful beaches, the country where everything wants to kill you… You will forget about the killing as soon as you think of that sexy accent that comes with this land.
The folks of Australia speak Australian English, which is a variety of the good old language. The first who spoke this version of the English language were the children of the colonists born in New South Wales who created a dialect that led to what is now the national language.
Nowadays, the accent that comes with the language is found to be incredibly sexy by people around the world. Whether it’s an actor or actress that has made it to Hollywood or a TV show presenter, the accent alone instantly makes them a lot more attractive.
4. Italian
Points – 15
Next up in our list is Italian, a language that descends from Latin, making it one of the oldest out there. The language is spoken primarily in Italy, Switzerland, the Vatican City and San Marino, but also in other areas of Europe.
The romantic notions associated with the language have turned it into one of the sexiest out there and those who speak with an Italian accent are found to be quite attractive. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the Italian people is quite good looking, either.
3. French
Points – 16
We’ve finally reached the “language of love,” or better known as French. This too is a Romance language, descending from the spoken Latin of the old empire, along with Italian, Spanish, Romanian and others.
The unique way in which the French intonate words when speaking English or other foreign languages makes it easy to pinpoint their country of origin. Hearing the accent must immediately link into the hearer’s brain to the notion that the French are quite good lovers. Whether true or false is of no consequence as the attraction is already there.
2. Irish
Points – 17
Moving back to the British Isles, we find the Irish people and their sexy accent. Ranking second on our list, it seems that people from all over the world find people with this accent to be incredibly attractive. Irish is the first language in the Republic of Ireland and a minority language in Northern Ireland, and it is spoken by a couple million people.
The Irish are quite chatty, and it’s impossible not to fall for their charms when they’re talking. The fact that you’re quite likely not to understand one word that comes out of their mouths when speaking their national language doesn’t really matter, because you’re more than happy to listen to them all day when their English is laced with that sexy accent.
1. English
Points – 18
We’ve reached the top of the chart to find British English sitting there comfortably, having its 5 o’clock tea while wearing a top hat. Joke aside, there really isn’t anything sexier out there than a proper British accent.
The British accent is, in fact, an umbrella term used for the many accents peppering the country, based on the location. On some occasions, for instance, you might not even recognize one word they’re saying, but you’re going to love the accent nonetheless. The standard accent, however, is the one most people love, the one you tie to the Royal family, Harry Potter and the many actors that originated in the Old Country.
This ties up the list of the 11 sexiest accents in the world.
